Public consultation

The industry associations responsible for the codes have conducted a robust public consultation process that reflects the requirements outlined in eSafety’s Development of Industry Codes under the Online Safety Act Position Paper. Our consultation included:

  • Proactively emailing over 200 stakeholders in each of the categories identified in the Position Paper with draft codes and Explanatory Memorandum encouraging them to lodge a submission, as well as promoting the consultation to the general public via the media.
  • A virtual roundtable with expert stakeholders on key issues relating to the draft Codes.
  • Commissioning Resolve Strategic to undertake consumer research on the general Australian public’s attitudes to issues relevant to the draft codes.

Input received from these three efforts has been published on this page. The industry associations are currently closely considering all of this input in their efforts to finalise the codes for registration by the Office of the eSafety Commissioner’s deadline of November 18, 2022.

Consumer research

The eSafety Position Paper notes that appropriate forms of consultation may include working groups, focus groups, surveys or web forums. In addition to submissions, DIGI and Communications Alliance commissioned independent research, undertaken by Resolve Strategic, to provide an evidence-base of the expectations of the general Australian public. A nationally representative study on issues relevant to the codes was undertaken during the consultation period from September 13 –18 , 2022.

Expert roundtable

On September 13, 2022, DIGI and Communications Alliance hosted an expert stakeholder roundtable, focused on key issues related to the codes. The roundtable was held under Chatham House Rules, and we have published a high level summary of the input received.

Submission log

Industry associations have created a log that extracts the key feedback from each submission received (where the submitter has given permission to publish) with notes on how this feedback has been considered in the finalisation of the codes.
